The Navarra Center for International Development (NCID) started receiving job market candidates yesterday, January 15, with the visit of Jonathan Lehne, who is finishing his Ph.D. at the Paris School of Economics. Lehne presented the paper 'Irrigation vs education: The long-run effects of opium cultivation in British India,' where he studies the long-term implications of British colonial policies regarding opium.

Resident Fellow Jaime Millan represented the Navarra Center for International Development at the IX Annual Meeting of the Institute for Culture and Society, which had the theme 'Development and social links (III): violence'. His presentation was titled "Boom of of income and armed violence: the case of palm cultivation in Colombia", an insight into his future publication which focused on the relationship between palm cultivation, paramilitary, violence and displacements in Colombia.
...Catia Batista is an Associate Professor of Economics at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Catia is also Co-Founder and Scientific Director of the NOVAFRICA research center. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Catia’s research interests are international migration and remittance flows, mobile money, entrepreneurship, technology adoption, education, and policy evaluation. She worked at the International Monetary Fund and consulted for the World Bank and the International Growth Center. Catia was a guest speaker at the NCID Workshop on Migration on November 11.
