General info on Junior Seminars

The Junior Seminars are focused on students coming from the faculties of Economics, Law, Communication and, Philosophy.

Topics covered by the Junior Seminars revolve around political, economic, and social issues. In order to be credited with the 2 ECTS, it is necessary to attend at least 80 percent of the sessions.  At the end of the academic year, there will be a presentation class where students are required to submit a report on chosen topic.

Activities

Student presentations: This is the main type of seminar. Students are required to choose an area they want to focus on and to present  to the rest of the class. There is a wide range of focused areasvarying from aid effectiveness to education and health challenges faced by developing countries. The approximate length of the presentation is half an hour, with a round of questions from the rest of the class afterwards.

News Comments: After the presentation, there is usually a brief commentary on related relevant news from the previous week. This is taken from recognized media and is interpolated by a person that worked or lived in the related geographical zone.

Book reviews: The Center issues a list of suggested books related to the relevant topics covered by the Junior Seminars. This type of presentation is optional and cannot be substituted by the class presentation on general poverty and development topics. Students who are interested may select a book from the Center’s suggested reading list or may suggest their own to the Center.   

Guests: Occasionally, we invite some interesting people and personalities that have work experience in global institutions. We believe that it is important not only to know how these institutions work in theory, but also to hear what it is really like to work there and what sort of problems they face to achieve their goals.

Suggested material and online courses: This part is optional as is the book review. The center will provide interesting and relevant massive open online courses (MOOCS), academic publications, books and articles if someone wants to go deeper in some specific area.
