NCID Resident Fellow Alex Armand has recently participated in the workshop “Beyond Development Aid: Sanitation Financing & Revenue Models in Reuse (human) Waste”. The workshop, co-organized by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) and WASTE, was held in the Netherlands, the 15th of May.
The event was organized as part of 3ie’s funded project on Slum Sanitation in India, in which Alex Armand is one of the principal investigators. It brought together academics, practitioners and policy-makers from different parts of the world with the aim of generating knowledge regarding sanitation financing and revenue models on sludge reuse. Discussions were of much interest due to their potential to overcome sanitation challenges in developing countries.
Slum Sanitation Project in India
The research project, led by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, aims to study an increasing concern for cities in developing countries: the lack of access to proper water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructures among slum dwellers. For that purpose, it aims at understanding the effectiveness of interventions in improving slum dweller’s willingness to pay for community toilet access.
