IE Business School Professor of Economics Rafael Pampillón has presented his new book 'When voters lose patience. Radical cases of economic policy'. Also participating in the event were Luis Ravina, director of the NCID, and Emili J. Blasco, professor of International Relations at the University of Navarra, who discussed with Pampillón the economic consequences of the conflict in Ukraine.
The author of the book, Rafael Pampillón, told in his presentation that economic crises throughout history have caused citizens to get fed up with their government: "Sometimes things go wrong in economy and there are two alternatives: a replacement , which is what normally happens in democracies, and continuity, which is what usually happens in dictatorships".
'When voters lose patience' is an invitation to travel through economic history: "The common thread of the book is that major crises lead to major changes in economic policy," Pampillón explained.
The presentation of the book was followed by a debate among the guests about the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine: "Russia has bet more on cannons and less on butter in recent decades. European sanctions are very hard and will affect the Russians a lot. Russia can lose the war, Pampillón explained". Regarding US foreign policy, the author of the book has argued that "they wanted to isolate China with a trade war to prevent it from becoming the world's leading economic power and now the Chinese have approached Russia."
Pampillón has also stated that it is likely that inflation will exceed 10% in June and that it is necessary to lower taxes temporarily: "Inflation will last as long as the war lasts," the guest assured.
