James Fenske's research focuses in the role of ecologically-driven gains from trade in the development of pre-colonial states; the high prevalence and rapid disappearance of African polygamy; the role of environmental shocks in the dynamics of the slave trade, and; the adaptation of property rights to trade before colonial rule.
